Breathing can help my pelvic floor? How…

This blog is not just for the Moms! Sometimes men deal with these muscle tension related symptoms, so Dads please read as well. Breathing is an undervalued part of pelvic floor rehab.

Think of your torso as a canister. The diaphragm is the top of the canister, our deep core (known as Transversus Abdominis) comprise the sides, and the pelvic floor muscles make up the bottom.

When we work on simple breathing exercises, we are actually changing the pressure in our pelvis, abdomen, and working our core. No sit ups necessary!

Try this breathing drill and think about what you feel.

  1. Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly

  2. Take a deep breath in through your nose counting to 4

  3. Assess the tension in your pelvis

Did you feel pressure, expansion, tension…?

Getting to know your body is a great place to start in your journey. It can sometimes be hard to know what you’re feeling, or objectively assess what the sensations mean to your core health.

Our Doctors of Physical Therapy are excellent with functional pelvic floor and core therapy. Fill out our contact form with any questions about core weakness, pelvic floor pain, leaking, frequent urge to urinate, or deep hip pain.
